Sedation, or Dentistry without pain

Sedation, or Dentistry without pain

Any effect on the body, including the use of, depending on the intensity, can cause some degree of discomfort, and sometimes pain. What can we say about dental treatment?

Fear of the desired procedure, memories of pain and discomfort sometimes force the patient to completely abandon it or do not allow the doctor to carry it out fully, with the necessary parameters of exposure.

Today, when conducting a particular treatment, the patient does not have to endure pain. It offers local anesthesia, anesthesia, sedation.shutterstock_100163522

Anesthesia is a deep depression of consciousness and pain sensitivity, respiration and protective reflexes, requiring special equipment, preparation and postoperative observation.

Local anesthesia – the introduction of local anesthetics into the surgical area. In itself, an unpleasant action that does not guarantee the absence of appropriate sensations and memories of the procedure.

Sedation is an immersion in a state similar to drowsiness, the so-called drug sleep. The person is relaxed and calm. This effect is achieved by introducing a small dose of drugs. The patient, which is important, is conscious, can follow some of the doctor’s instructions. This type of benefit can be successfully used for short and low-traumatic interventions, which, however, require the use of local anesthesia and the patient’s patience.

Anesthesia, sedation, anesthesia are completely different concepts. Sedation is not a substitute for local anesthesia – an anesthetic injection. When introducing the patient into this state, local anesthesia is still necessary.

It also differs from “treatment in a dream”, in an unconscious state – from anesthesia. Dental treatment under sedation is a much more gentle procedure for the patient’s body.

Breathing is normal.
Cough and swallowing reflexes are not blocked.

An important advantage is that the procedure is not stored in the patient’s memory. The reason for this is that the patient is in a deeply relaxed state, which blocks the perception of external irritating factors.

In addition, drugs used in dentistry for sedation cause partial amnesia (memory loss) for the duration of their exposure to the body. This is a short term effect; the introduction of small doses allows you to return to normal life a short time after the end of the procedure.

Intravenous sedation is a type of anesthesia used in our clinic. The drug enters the body intravenously through a catheter. It is specially fixed in the vein throughout the entire procedure – for the introduction of additional injections, medications, if necessary.

Despite the fact that sedation has a slight therapeutic effect, the preparation for it is the same as for anesthesia. The patient must be tested and consult with an anesthesiologist before treatment.
